La z2o Sara Zanin is pleased to announce the opening of its new venue in Rome, in via Alessandro Volta 34, on Saturday March 16th, 2024. The opening event is the exhibition Contrappunti, a group show involving all the artists of the gallery. The exhibition will continue in the spaces of z2o Project, in via Baccio Pontelli 16, aiming to create a close dialogue between the two locations.
The new gallery, characterized by an industrial atmosphere, is located in Testaccio, a lively neighbourhood with a rich cultural heritage and a long history linked to art. The space has been chosen after careful analysis, as z2o had long been searching for a larger and more functional venue capable of accommodating the research projects and site-specific installations that have always defined the gallery’s identity. The interior spaces, redesigned by the studio Bevilacqua Architects, have been renovated to enhance and preserve the artworks to the fullest.
Furthermore, the proximity of the main location to the z2o Project space, which will continue to host exhibitions and special projects, encourages creative synergy and ongoing dialogue between the two venues.
Contrappunti includes the works of all the represented artists and those with whom z2o has collaborated, and who have helped to define their identity since its inception: Evgeny Antufiev (1986), Mariella Bettineschi (1948), Silvia Camporesi (1973), Pier Paolo Calzolari (1943), Michele Guido (1976), Tomoe Hikita (1985), Anna Hulačová (1984), Kaarina Kaikkonen (1952), Krištof Kintera (1973), Giovanni Kronenberg (1974), Guglielmo Maggini (1992), Alexi Marshall (1995), Beatrice Meoni (1960), Hidetoshi Nagasawa (1940-2018), Ekaterina Panikanova (1975), Beatrice Pediconi (1972), Alfredo Pirri (1957), Nazzarena Poli Maramotti (1987), Fabrizio Prevedello (1972), Marta Roberti (1977), Cesare Tacchi (1940-2014), Michele Tocca (1983).
Contrappunti reflects the idea of harmony and diversity and refers to the interaction between independent melodies that intertwine to create a harmonious composition. The term Contrappunto – puntum contra punctum – has the property of representing the dualistic principle discussed in Aristotle’s Metaphysics in “seeing in the contrary the principle of things” and achieve balance through the juxtaposition of two opposing elements.
The exhibition displays one work for each artist, seen as the sum of their work, and in this comparison, the different artistic expressions converge and overlap, like intertwined harmonies in a symphony, weaving a complex yet elegant visual score. The exhibited works – some of which were created specifically for the occasion – combine the diverse individual aesthetic experiences into a polychromatic and transversal narrative, where different formal approaches merge to form a harmonious whole, contributing to the overall structure of the exhibition.
Introspective and seemingly silent narrative take shape using books and embroidery, subtle and fluctuating images explore the adaptability of nature and humanity, animating the gallery rooms and transforming intimate and personal stories into universal experiences. Gazes that assert female subjectivity through innovative and personal language or that seek and uncover hidden wonders create an emotional tension and place the viewer in a suspended dimension. The exhibition halls become a place where time settles into an eternal movement generated by the diverse harmonies of the works of individual artists. The individual aesthetic-artistic conceptions, asserting themselves with their materiality in the present time, aim to underline the importance of the past and the history of the gallery, and at the same time they offer glimpses of future directions on the horizon.
